How it wins

Use early attackers to reduce the opponent’s life, then choose between removing a blocker and sending damage at the opponent to enable another card. The burn should help a real attack plan.

Early
Establish attackers before buying repeated small-damage effects. Use mana efficiently enough that an opponent must respect the board.
Middle
Decide whether removal creates more damage than a player-directed ping. If returning Repriser, budget the noncombat damage to an opponent and the black-red activation.
Finish
Combine evasive attacks with useful burn to finish. A Repriser returned with finality is normally exiled when it would die, not returned forever.

What it needs

Consider Stingerquill when early attackers, useful interaction and noncombat damage to opponents are all available. A single Grim Repriser is a playable start, not proof that the recurring-damage engine is complete.

Four checks while you draft

  1. 1
    Creatures that can actually attack

Does this pick add a useful early attacker instead of another setup-only card?

Small bodies need combat utility or a way to grow; recurring damage does not compensate for an empty board.

  2. 2
    Damage to the opponent

Can its damage actually reach an opponent outside combat?

These effects can satisfy a noncombat-damage condition. Damage only to a creature does not.

  3. 3
    Make the enabling damage matter

Which creature or recursion ability benefits from that damage, and can I pay for it too?

A flying attacker or returned creature gives a damage effect a second job. Some cards instead reward casting the spell itself.

  4. 4
    Keep attacking through blockers

Does it remove the blocker that stops my attack without depending on a bonus first?

Choose efficient answers before adding narrow pings that merely shave a life point.

Choose the missing job before another reward that needs it.

What to take next

You have Grim Repriser but cannot reliably enable its return.

Look for noncombat damage to an opponent attached to a useful card.

Vicious Verse reaches an opponent; No Admittance can hit one too. Leave black-red mana for the return ability after the damage.

You have burn and expensive payoffs but few attacks.

Take a creature that can enter combat early.

Battlecarver costs two. Emberling costs three and keeps counters from noncreature spells; neither requires an opponent-damage trigger first.

A large blocker is stopping several attackers.

Compare killing that blocker with turning on a small bonus.

Charm can deal three damage to a creature; Extended Absence exiles. Pointing burn at the player is not automatically the best damage plan.

The support is missing

Keep solid creatures and removal, using damage bonuses incidentally. If your available red cards are only narrow pings, retain the black core and investigate a partner that supplies real board development.

Signals to watch
  • Skilled Battlecarver and Chandra’s Emberling repeatedly reaching you suggest red pressure may be available. Compare them with your actual black bodies and answers.
  • Screeching Soulbreaker plus useful burn such as No Admittance gives the damage plan several jobs. Voxmancer alone is narrower evidence than this supporting package.

Repeated useful cards are clues, not proof that the colors are open.

Don’t
Every life change is damage

Life loss is not automatically damage, and combat damage is not noncombat damage. Read the enabling effect.

Spending the removal on a bonus

Killing a blocker may win the game sooner than aiming burn at the opponent for a modest trigger. Evaluate the whole attack.

Two damage payoffs are still missing the damage

Repriser and Wordsmith together need actual noncombat damage to an opponent. Damage only to a creature does not satisfy them.

2 examples

Examples apply the printed rules; judge the board, costs and timing.

Restore an attacker for a later turn

  1. When the board permits, cast No Admittance targeting the opponent.
  2. After it deals damage, pay BR to return Grim Repriser from your graveyard.
  3. It returns with finality and no haste; normally it cannot attack that turn. Do not sacrifice board safety merely to unlock this.

Turn a small ping into a larger one

  1. Let Voxmancer reach your upkeep so it becomes prepared. It does not enter prepared.
  2. With Tomik in play, cast its Vicious Verse at the opponent during a main phase.
  3. The spell deals two instead of one, and casting it triggers Tomik’s prowess. The creature prepares again on a later upkeep.

With a damage reward secured, look for a useful opponent-damage card plus the attacker or answer the deck lacks. Judge the two choices as part of your whole curve.Prioritize burn with useful targets and creatures that can attack without a special trigger. A narrow ping can wait when you have not yet drafted anything that rewards it.This is especially sensitive to missing pieces in Sealed. Community prerelease discussion specifically doubts the density of the small-burn engine; no match data settles the question yet.Choose one complete pair before the game only when its castable half helps this deck. If you exile the Danitha pair, then resolve Danitha, Spear of Agony before casting No Admittance at an opponent or their creature to gain a counter; targeting only their planeswalker will not trigger her. Normal costs and timing still apply; only one half can be cast from exile. You may leave the other half in exile instead of shuffling it. Ask your store whether both halves must be in your deck.
