Prowess accompanies an additional damage point whenever your sources deal noncombat damage to opposing players or permanents; needs plentiful noncombat-damage sources.
How this changes your picks
Rules-derived- Take it when
- Choose him for existing damage support, not as a reason to force red.
- What to take next
- Upgrade repeatable pings or useful burn spells that your deck already wants.
- Wrong pick
- Do not confuse his prowess bonus with the damage bonus: ordinary combat damage is not increased.
- Mana & splash
- A single red pip is castable with fixing, but a splash still needs enough qualifying damage to justify the slot.

More
- Pick-Two
- Its printed cost is 1R. Count the colored symbols as well as the low total when deciding whether it fills an early slot.
- Sealed vs Draft
- A low-cost creature helps an early slot only if your lands can cast it; read its abilities before assuming it attacks or blocks normally.
- Two-Headed Giant
- Only sources you control get the noncombat damage increase. Your teammate’s burn spells do not receive it.
