How it wins

Trade and reuse creatures so you spend fewer fresh cards than the opponent. Then win with flyers, an enlarged Edgar, or a surviving threat after their resources run low.

Early
Develop creatures and make useful trades before paying for loops. Keep enough defenders that sacrificing a spare body does not expose a lethal attack.
Middle
Spend a body only for a worthwhile exchange. Rescue Girl returns another permanent to hand only during your turn, and replaying it costs mana again.
Finish
Finish with surviving threats or flyers after reusing material. Respect finality and exile: a card that never reaches your graveyard is not a return target.

What it needs

Investigate this attrition plan when early creatures leave something useful behind and white or black supplies removal. Add sacrifice and return engines once the targets are real.

Four checks while you draft

  1. 1
Bodies with something left after trading

Does this pick provide a useful body before I start returning or sacrificing creatures?

A small body is more useful when it already forced a discard or can be used from the graveyard.

  2. 2
A profitable way to spend the body

What do I gain by sacrificing this creature, and can I afford to lose it?

Sacrificing should improve the exchange, not destroy a creature you still need just to turn on text.

  3. 3
A second use of the card

Is there a worthwhile target for the return or replay effect, within its restrictions?

Returns and replays need targets worth their mana. A slow repeatable engine is strongest once the board is stable.

  4. 4
Answers that let the long game happen

Does this answer help me survive long enough to reuse my cards?

Cheap removal stops an engine turn from becoming lethal damage; broad exile handles recurring threats.

Choose the missing job before another reward that needs it.

What to take next

You have Edgar or Silence the Echo but no body you can afford to spend.

Look for a creature with value before or after leaving play.

Rat can discard a card on entry; Crier can be exiled from the graveyard to empower Jace. Neither makes sacrificing a needed blocker free.

You have Rescue Girl but little reason to return your own permanent.

Choose a replay target with a relevant entry effect.

Rat can force another discard if the opponent still has cards. Aspirant offers a counter or a legendary-card return, but costs five to recast.

The deck can recur cards but is losing before doing so.

Take the cheap or broad answer your next turns require.

Last Gasp costs two; Memory Trap handles a different range of threats for three. A slow loop can wait.

The support is missing

Retain the solid bodies, flyers and answers if the reusable pieces do not arrive. Cut slow loops that spend several turns without improving combat rather than forcing the graveyard theme.

Signals to watch
  • Rank Rat or Campus Crier arriving with Last Gasp or Memory Trap offers a useful creature-and-answer base, even before an engine is found.
  • Rescue Girl alongside creatures with useful entry abilities can suggest a replay package. A return effect arriving by itself is weaker evidence than worthwhile targets arriving too.

Repeated useful cards are clues, not proof that the colors are open.

Don’t
An engine without a battlefield

Returning cards costs mana before those cards help block. Stabilize before repeatedly bouncing or buying creatures back.

Finality and exile

A finality-marked creature is exiled instead of dying. Exile removal also prevents an ordinary graveyard return plan.

Two engines can compete for the same missing body

Edgar and a return effect are not a complete package by themselves. Count the creatures you can actually trade, sacrifice and recover.

Examples apply the printed rules; judge the board, costs and timing.

Repeat the discard after stabilizing

  1. Let Rank Rat enter and make the opponent discard.
  2. On a later own turn when Rescue Girl can tap, return the Rat to your hand.
  3. Recast it for another entry trigger. This costs mana each time and does nothing to an empty hand; Rescue Girl cannot activate on their turn.

Turn a spent body into a larger threat

  1. After the Rat’s entry effect, resolve Way of the Deathbringer.
  2. If your Jace has not activated this turn, use the granted −2 and sacrifice the Rat as the ability resolves.
  3. Create a 4/4 trampling Beast. Do not count this as preserving the Rat unless you actually have another return effect.

Adapt the plan to your format

When choosing a sacrifice or replay engine, compare taking its useful body alongside it with taking a second engine. Both picks should function while you are still defending.Draft good bodies and removal before narrow return loops. With one pick, choose the missing target or outlet instead of assuming both will arrive later.Sealed often permits a small reuse package within a normal creature deck; it does not require a complete sacrifice archetype. Compare the mana spent on a loop to simply casting a stronger threat.Choose one complete pair before the game only when its castable half helps this deck. If you exile the Edgar pair and Rank Rat has already made the opponent discard, then Edgar, Ancient Bloodlord gives that body another use: pay {2} and sacrifice it for Edgar’s counter, temporary menace and a life-gain trigger. Normal costs and timing still apply; only one half can be cast from exile. You may leave the other half in exile instead of shuffling it. Ask your store whether both halves must be in your deck.
